LOCATION: Los Angeles Zoo, 5333 Zoo Drive., Los Angeles, CA 90027

DATE/TIME: January 3, 2018 - 1:00- 2:30pm

Leif and Gary will speak about his experiences with orangutans, some of the challenges facing the species, what TOP and OURF are doing to save the great red ape.

Leif Cocks - Founder/President, The Orangutan Project
***
Few people understand and connect with orangutans, like 52-year-old Leif Cocks does. For almost three decades, Leif, founder of the international charity, The Orangutan Project, has tirelessly worked to save his ‘orange cousins’, who share 97% human DNA, from extinction.

Leif shares the fascinating inside story of his personal journey with these creatures who captivated his heart and mind, and ultimately formed his life’s work. Part memoir, part philosophical discussion, part scientific case for conservation and 100% a call to action for all who wish to help save the orangutan.

Gary L. Shapiro, Ph.D – President, Orang Utan Republik Foundation/TOP-USA.
***
Gary Shapiro is president of the non-profit organization, Orang Utan Republik Foundation (OURF), also known as The Orangutan Project-USA. Before starting OURF with his Indonesian wife in 2004, Shapiro was co-founder and vice president of the Orangutan Foundation International (1985-2004). His interest and experience with orangutans started in 1973 when he became the first person to teach a symbolic communication system to an orangutan (at the now Chaffee Zoological Park, Fresno, CA) and later the first person teach sign language to orangutans in the species’ natural environment, the forests of Tanjung Puting National Park, Indonesian Borneo (1978-1980; 1981). During his time in Indonesian Borneo, Shapiro assisted in rehabilitating dozens of orangutans confiscated from the illegal pet trade and became concerned about the future of the great ape.
