Get to Know a Wild Orangutan and Help Protect the Majestic Red Apes of the Mawas Reserve in Central Borneo

The Guard-a-Wild Orangutan program is a unique opportunity to directly support the protection of one of our planet’s most intelligent and endangered species. Nestled within the heart of Central Borneo, the Mawas Conservation Area, home to the Tuanan Orangutan Research Station project, is a vital peat swamp forest home to hundreds of wild orangutans. The Tuanan Orangutan Research Station is the only orangutan research station not within a National Park in Indonesia, and the area is currently managed by KPHL Kapuas. These ancient forests provide sanctuary for these remarkable creatures and serve as one of the world's most critical carbon stores, playing a vital role in combating climate change.

By joining the Guard-a-Wild Orangutan program, you can help ensure the survival of these gentle beings and safeguard their habitat for generations to come.

Why the Tuanan Orangutans Need Your Support

The Mawas Conservation Area faces increasing deforestation, fires, and encroaching development threats. Protecting the orangutans of Tuanan means:

  • Preserving a keystone species essential for forest regeneration.
  • Supporting global efforts to mitigate climate change by conserving carbon-rich peatland forests.
  • Empowering local communities with sustainable conservation initiatives.

Your contribution will directly fund critical conservation activities, including patrolling for illegal activities, habitat restoration, and research efforts to better understand and protect wild orangutans.

A Thoughtful Gift with Impact

The Guard-a-Wild Orangutan program makes a meaningful and unforgettable gift for loved ones who care about wildlife and the environment. Whether it's for a birthday, holiday, or special occasion, gifting this program shows your commitment to a sustainable planet and reflects a shared passion for conservation. In addition, your gift is completely tax-deductible.

When you choose to guard a wild orangutan of Tuanan, your recipient will receive:

  • A Personalized Certificate of Guardianship with the name of the recipient, a bio about the orangutan, a photo of the orangutan, maps showing his or her location, and a fact sheet.
  • Exclusive Updates about the conservation efforts in the Mawas Reserve and stories of the orangutans benefiting from your support.
  • Recognition in the Fight Against Climate Change, as every contribution helps protect the peat swamp forest and the critical species it shelters.

Program Benefits

By joining the Guard-a-Wild Orangutan program, you’re helping to:

  1. Protect Wild Orangutans: Your support funds field teams to patrol and monitor orangutans in the Mawas Reserve.
  2. Restore Critical Habitat: Contributions go towards planting trees and restoring degraded areas to ensure a healthy ecosystem for orangutans and other wildlife.
  3. Support Conservation Research: Enable vital studies on orangutan behavior, health, and ecology to inform better conservation strategies.
